James Corden to Be New Face of The Late Late Show

It has been confirmed that the American late-night television talk show The Late Late Show will be getting a new host at the beginning of next year in the form of English funnyman James Corden.

The Late Late Show was launched in 1995 with then-host Tom Snyder, but since 2005 has been hosted by Craig Ferguson. But Ferguson has announced that he will be stepping down from the hosting pedestal in December, and rumours have been circling for the past month or so about who is going to replace him.

At the moment, Corden isn’t hugely known in the US, despite winning a Tony Award for his role in Broadway’s One Man, Two Guvnors. But all that could change just in time for him take over at The Late Late Show, when upcoming movie Into the Woods is released. The movie stars Corden alongside various Hollywood names such as Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep.

In the UK, though, James Corden is a household name. The 36-year-old’s career dates back to 1997, including recurring roles in television series Teachers, Fat Friends, and The Wrong Mans, as well as Gavin and Stacey, which Corden created with co-star Ruth Jones (possibly better known as ‘Nessa’). He also hosted sports-based comedy panel show A League of Their Own and has been in a number of films.

“I can’t describe how thrilled and honoured I am to be taking over from the brilliant Craig Ferguson,” Corden enthused. He said that being asked to host the prestigious show was hugely exciting and that he will do his best to make it show that America will enjoy. ” I can’t wait to get started!”

“James Corden is a rare entertainment force who combines irresistible charm, warmth and originality, with a diverse range of creative instincts and performance talent,” said CBC channel boss, Nina Tassler, in a recent statement making the announcement of Corden’s takeover.

She explained that Corden is loved in every medium he has put his hand to, from comedy to music to theatre, and is a great combination of creator, writer and performer. “We’re very excited to introduce his considerable and very unique talents to our network television audience on a daily basis,” she added.

The Late Late Show immediately follows The Late Show with David Letterman, but the long time host of that talk show is also bidding farewell. David Letterman originally hosted the show on NBC back in 1982 but moved to CBS in 1993. He announced in April this year that after 32 years, he will be retiring at the beginning of 2015, with Stephen Colbert taking over the coveted position of host.
