Gromit Unleashed: Auctions Raise Over £2m

A cracking night for Bristol’s children’s hospital as Gromits fetch £2,357,000 When these fantastic sculptures first lined our streets back in July of this year, the slogan for the highly anticipated Gromit Unleashed trail read, “80 Gromits, 10 weeks, 1 city”. However as the final showcase for the Gromits concluded last night, one would argue that a much better slogan for the trail would have read “92 Gromits, 2 cities, a life time”.

Over 10,000 people were invited to the auction at The Mall Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, to witness the final farewell to Bristol’s beloved hounds and thousands more were given the opportunity to bid online.

BBC’s Tim Wonnacott, took to the stage at 7:30 to welcome the lucky bidders to the auction, The bidding swiftly got under way shortly after, with Emily Golden’s Patch, who had been living on Clifton Hill, got the night off to a fantastic start, scooping £36,000.

Gromit Unleashed fans tuned in to an internet live stream from all over the world, to discover which sculpture would sell for the greatest amount of money, and it was The Secret Garden, situated at Lye Cross Cheese Farm over the summer, who took an early lead selling for £44,000.

Experts from the City of Bristol Art Gallery had predicted that popular Gromits Golden Gromit and Sir Gromit of Bristol would fetch among the greatest amounts of money.

Sir Gromit was under the hammer first, heavily clad in a suit of protective metal, the pooch in shining armour sold for an impressive £28,000. 21 lots later was the turn of Golden Gromit, who proved to be so popular with one Bristol couple, that they changed the location of their wedding at the very last minute just so they were able to have their wedding photos featuring the sculpture. This model sold for £30,000, slightly below the predictions of the experts.

The majority of Gromits started off at £10,00, but this wasn’t the case for Blossom as a small child had written to Gromit Unleashed to place a bid of £11 for the sculpture. Every Gromit that took a place on the trail had a unique style that set it out from every other sculpture. However, this wasn’t the case for Hound Dog and The King, who were both appropriately named and designed on the same iconic figure, Elvis Presley. The pair sold for £53,000.

The room erupted at 9:03, when One Direction’s own Zayn Malik’s fabulous Green Gromit came up for sale this saw the auction’s first online bidder outside of the UK in the end the auction was won at £24,000 by a live attendee of the auction, this bid carried the overall total over £1,000,000 before even reaching the halfway point.

Wonnacott was clearly very excited about auctioning off the Matthew’s New Foundland, which had taken residence aboard the Matthew for the British summer. He snapped the piece up for himself at £30,000. One of the night’s many high points came in the form of Lot 45 as Gerald Scarfe’s OBE Gromit went under the hammer, a short clip of Scarfe painting the Gromit was played, before it smashed the record and took home a cracking £50,000.

Other stars jumped on the Gromit band wagon as well, as the works of Cath Kitson MBE, Harry Hill, Joanna Lumley OBE and Jools Holland, all went under the hammer to do their bit for the overall total.

The biggest talking point of the evening was lot number 65, and one of the most beloved characters in film history took to the stage in Gromit form, Gromit Lightyear, this was many people’s choice to take home the most amount of money for the charity and the bidding war that ensued shortly after the bidding got underway proved them right.

The winner was to be found on the internet, purchasing the piece for a very generous, £65,000. After all 81 of the large Gromits had taken to the stage, it was time to auction off 11 smaller sculptures.

The designs featured on these were those of competition winners and were all painted by Lindsay Webb. The first 10 puppies fetched an incredible £126,000 collectively, but it would be the final Gromit, that would steal the show. Lot 92 will be a moment, which will be remembered by every Gromit Unleashed fan who witnessed it, as two nurses from the hospital the cause was supporting brought out the final sculpture titled Bristol Children’s Hospital Gromit which had been painted by patients at the hospital itself. The heart warming sculpture was sold for £21,000, to a bidder in the audience who had been unsuccessful in his attempts to take home some of the artwork all night.
